Also known at various times as the Charter House and the Charterhouse Hotel, the name of this pub reflects the nearby remains of the Carthusian monastery.
Born in 1940, Howard Macey has these memories of the Charterhouse:
I lived 166 Terry Road. I used to go and get my Mum a bottle of stout once a week. Sid [Wilday] would serve me and say "hide it up you jumper". I was about 12 years old. When I was 18 I used to play darts in the pub.
The pub opened on Monday 7th August 1916 under licensee Herbert Gerald Underhill.
The manager in 1924 was Major G. E. Potter, M.C., late of the 7th. Queen's Own Hussars. As an example of the effect of the reform movement on public houses, he advertised catering, accommodation, billiards, snooker, bagatelle, clock golf, croquet, room hire, concerts every Sunday evening and a lawn. A busy place then!
