Bull and Anchor, Bishop St This pub was established by 1748 as the CROWN AND ANCHOR. From around 1766 it started to be known simply by the Sign of the ANCHOR, and from 1774 became variously known as the BULL's HEAD AND ANCHOR or just BULL AND ANCHOR. It is marked on the 1851 Board of Health map as the BULL'S HEAD AND ANCHOR. When B. G. Holton took possession of the pub in 1858 he renamed it the RUTLAND ARMS - a name only lasting two years before reverting to the BULL AND ANCHOR. By 1869 the Bull and Anchor began to be known as the OLDE BULL AND ANCHOR, but this stops being used after 1896, reverting the simply BULL AND ANCHOR, which it continued as until the pub was declared redundant in February 1931. An auction on Tuesday 8th March 1932 realised £1,000 for the pub, which was described as having vacant possession and suitable for conversion to a shop or club.
